Just Us People exists among other things to:

Provide a productive, active, outlet for our worries, outrage and hopes.
Connect us with others who feel as we do– we aren’t alone!
Be a part of history, knowing we showed up when it mattered.

This newsletter seeks to keep our group informed and engaged. But as you
know, things move so fast! By the time one newsletter goes out, lots more
will have happened. We’ll try to keep up. Please pass this on! We will focus on:

Events: What’s next?
Following a super successful No Kings Day -more than 700 people participated-we
all want to know what is next! Our actions, including massive protests, are
building ‘our muscle’ and getting us ready for even bigger challenges. Here is
some of what is happening next.

July 17 th - Good Trouble Lives On. The Transformational Justice Coalition is honoring the 5th anniversary of civil rights leader, John Lewis’s, passing, by designating the 17th of July as Good Trouble Lives On Day. JUP has reached out to local groups to see how we can support them-we will keep you informed of any planned action. To find out more, go to tjcoalition.org

One Million Rising - a Training Series. Indivisible, in response to pressing threats, is launching a national initiative, to train and mobilize a vast network of individuals. We don’t know who is eligible to sign up for these training sessions, so we have reached out to Indivisible and will report back as soon as we know something. The first date is July 16 th from 8pm to 9pm. An email has been forwarded to you with much more information…

What’s The Plan? Indivisible hosts a zoom meeting every Thursday, from 3 -4pm to discuss what’s next and take questions. If you have the time, it’s a helpful meeting. A summary of recent highlights from this meeting is below under Commentary.

JUP Meeting on June 18th. You should all have received an email from Karen W. about this get together. Stormy weather, but great meeting! Many people want more regular meetings. We will try to figure something out. We need a place to meet that is convenient, big enough to hold us and free! If you know of such a place, please let us know!

Calls to Action:

Stop Ice Overreach-Tell our Attorney General to Fight. This action is intended for states, such as Michigan, with a Democrat Attorney General. Go to the Indivisible website, scroll to Take Action Now, or go to Bluestatedefiance.org. They have language for a call and a template for an email to send to the AG. There may also be a local action so stay tuned for that. https://indivisible.org/ and https://www.bluestatedefiance.org/

Big Bad Bill The BBB is advancing but it’s not there yet! This bill is wildly unpopular and for good reason. Currently in the Senate, it will go back to the House. We will let you know of any planned action beyond calls and emails.

Media expansion Nationally, we are not reaching as many people in as many places as we will need. If you know of any local influencers, media groups, podcasters, etc. let them know what we are doing here and why. Media coverage will be critical going forward. We need to “be the buzz”.

Commentary - What’s The Plan?

We are in the midst of an autocratic breakthrough. An autocratic breakthrough is when the would-be dictator and his allies move rapidly to crush alternative sources of power: courts, media, the legal profession, universities, science, congress, businesses and members of the opposition. It then becomes a race against time.
Autocrats want us to believe that they’re invincible and their victory is inevitable. They hope that we will believe that their ascendency is a foregone conclusion. But autocrats are not invincible, and autocracy is not inevitable. The 5 million people that turned out on No Kings Day is evidence enough of that.
Protests are a critical piece of our work. They bring in new people and groups and provide inspiration and connection. They make a statement about the size and strength of the opposition.
Experts in authoritarian takeovers tell us that no autocrat has ever survived when 3% of the population continuously and over time protests in various ways. We are halfway there. Now we must work on more than one front, using multiple tactics, such as legislative advocacy, boycotts, etc. The goals are to mitigate or lessen harm and drive down MAGA approval by building a bigger coalition. Stay tuned.
